Getting a SIP 403 Forbidden response can be frustrating because the exact cause can vary depending on the SIP provider, PBX, SBC, or trunk configuration.

In this discussion, let’s share the most common reasons for receiving a 403 Forbidden response and the troubleshooting steps that have worked in real-world VoIP environments.

Some areas worth checking include:

  • SIP authentication and credentials
  • IP whitelisting or IP-based authentication
  • Caller ID restrictions
  • SIP From and To headers
  • Destination number format
  • Trunk or account permissions
  • Provider-side security or fraud restrictions
  • SIP response codes and call logs

What has been the most common cause of SIP 403 Forbidden in your setup?

If you have encountered this issue, feel free to share the setup, SIP response, or relevant log details (with passwords, phone numbers, IPs, and other sensitive information removed) so others can help troubleshoot it.

We recently ran into a 403 on outbound calls, and in our case the SIP credentials were fine. The provider was rejecting the Caller ID because it wasn't authorized on the trunk. Checking the provider's Caller ID requirements and the `From` header helped us identify the issue.

One thing I'd check early is IP authentication. If the provider uses IP-based authentication, a changed public IP or missing IP whitelist entry can result in a 403.

The SIP response from the carrier is usually more useful than just seeing "403 Forbidden" in the PBX interface.
